We are delighted to announce the release of a major milestone for the COLOURS European University Alliance – the launch of the COLOURS System of Microcredentials and its first official leaflet. This achievement reflects our shared commitment to lifelong learning, innovation in higher education, and the development of challenge-based and inclusive learning opportunities across Europe.
Microcredentials are reshaping the future of education by offering flexible, modular, and skill-oriented learning experiences. They allow learners of all backgrounds – students, professionals, educators, and staff – to develop and demonstrate valuable competencies aligned with societal needs and local innovation priorities. At the same time, they promote accessibility, upskilling, and a personalised approach to education that extends beyond traditional degree programmes.
As a key first step in the implementation of our microcredential strategy, COLOURS has developed a comprehensive system of Digital Badges. These badges are visual, verifiable credentials that recognise a wide range of achievements, including open science practices, intercultural collaboration, sustainability efforts, pedagogical innovation, digital fluency, and more. Each badge is linked to a clear set of validation criteria and includes detailed metadata, making it a reliable and portable indicator of skills and learning.
The leaflet below presents the official Catalogue of COLOURS Digital Badges, developed under the leadership of Le Mans University (LMU) in close collaboration with Jan Dlugosz University (JDU). It is the result of a joint effort between Work Package 2 (Collaboration without Barriers), Work Package 3 (COLOURS Open Education), and the Microcredential Taskforce. The document introduces the purpose, categories, and validation mechanisms of our badges and outlines how they fit into the broader COLOURS ecosystem – one that is open, inclusive, and aligned with European education frameworks.
We warmly invite you to explore the leaflet and join us in celebrating this important step towards a more agile and learner-centred future.
