Cultivating Collaboration: Rain Fails to Dampen Spirits at the Second Edition of “Ferrara si fa in 4R”

A Resilient Community Braving the Elements for Sustainability

On Friday, 15 May 2026, the city of Ferrara experienced a sharp reminder of climate unpredictability. Just a week after enjoying a balmy 23°C, temperatures plummeted to a chilly 9°C, accompanied by grey skies, biting winds, and torrential rain. Yet, inside the TekneHub, the atmosphere was nothing short of electric.

Despite the adverse weather, more than 60 passionate participants gathered for the second edition of “Ferrara si fa in 4R”, an initiative dedicated this year to the vital theme of “A Guide to Sustainable Food”. Organized by the University of Ferrara (Unife) in close partnership with the European University Alliance COLOURS, the event proved that community dedication to ecological transition can weather any storm. Faced with logistical disruptions, our COLOURS ambassadors and civil volunteers demonstrated incredible enthusiasm, seamlessly rolling out plans B, C, and all the way to Z to ensure the afternoon was an absolute success.

The Quadruple Helix in Action: Co-Creation from Day One

This year’s event was a textbook example of the Quadruple Helix model, built upon active co-creation among four pivotal groups from its inception:

  • Policy Makers: Represented by the Municipality of Ferrara.
  • Academia: Driven by Unife and the COLOURS Alliance.
  • Industry & Local Businesses: Supported by regional utilities and specialized green enterprises.
  • NGOs & Citizens: Channeled through environmental volunteer groups and enthusiastic residents.

As Unife Rector Laura Ramaciotti noted, shifting towards sustainable food systems is no longer a choice, but a collective responsibility. Global agrifood systems generate nearly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By bringing together scientific knowledge and community action, the university aims to spearhead the cultural shift necessary to mitigate these figures.

Sandrine Labory, Delegate for the COLOURS Alliance, emphasized how the event demonstrated the tangible, local benefits of European university collaboration, bringing European values of environmental protection and human well-being directly to the citizens of Ferrara.

Step Inside the Future: The Armònia Hydroponic Greenhouse

The crown jewel of the afternoon was an immersive tour of the Serra Armònia, an avant-garde hydroponic greenhouse operating under the CIAS Research Centre at the Tecnopolo.

“The hydroponic greenhouse represents a pioneering model for the agriculture of the future,” explained Professor Sante Mazzacane, Director of CIAS. “Completely insulated from external climate uncertainties, it multiplies crop yields by at least six times compared to traditional soil farming. It operates under a regime of absolute sustainability—slashing water and energy consumption, eliminating pesticides completely, and utilizing Artificial Intelligence algorithms for real-time remote monitoring.”

Interactive Workshops and a Sustainable Taste of Tomorrow

The afternoon was packed with hands-on learning experiences designed to turn environmental theory into daily practice. Visitors engaged in a variety of tailored activities:

  • The Waste Challenge: Interactive sorting trials to master the recycling and management of domestic packaging, guided by local experts.
  • The Zero-Waste Craft Workshop: Transforming recycled waste into creative, functional items.
  • The Sustainable Food Quiz: Testing guests’ knowledge on the carbon footprint of their grocery baskets.
  • Culinary Masterclass: Participants learned the art of making authentic Italian pesto using fresh, fragrant basil harvested directly from the Armònia greenhouse.

The event concluded on a high note with a fully sustainable, zero-kilometre buffet provided by key partner Boschetto26. The absolute highlight of the catering was a bespoke Basil Gin & Tonic (alongside a refreshing non-alcoholic version) infused with basil grown right inside the hydroponic greenhouse.
