Hands-on Projects (HOP): COLOURS innovative educational initiative

Hands-On Projects (HOP): A New Era of Experiential Learning at COLOURS

The COLOURS Alliance proudly introduces Hands-On Projects (HOP), an innovative educational initiative. This challenge-based model equips students with the skills and mindset needed to become active agents of transformative change in their regions and beyond, aligning with European values and goals.

What is HOP?

HOP marks a shift from traditional internships to a dynamic, challenge-based learning model. Unlike conventional internships, often offered to a limited number of students, HOP involves practical research projects realised during courses, where students collaborate to solve real-world challenges proposed by regional stakeholders. These projects are mentored by professors from partner universities who work closely with stakeholders, including companies, NGOs, and policymakers, fostering a rich international collaborative learning environment for knowledge co-creation.

Key Purposes and Benefits

HOPs bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. By engaging in these projects, students develop essential problem-solving skills and competencies crucial for today’s labour markets. Beyond individual learning, HOP projects contribute to regional innovation by addressing local challenges and fostering collaboration between universities and other stakeholders of the quadruple helix. For students, HOPs offer a unique opportunity to work in international teams, enhancing their cultural competence and global perspective. The projects are flexible, accommodating various forms of mobility, including blended and in-person formats, to suit the needs of both students and stakeholders.

Why HOP is Innovative

HOPs transform how universities and stakeholders interact. By focusing on challenge-based research collaborations, HOP allows for a more inclusive and participatory process where stakeholders are involved not just in implementing results but in the design and execution of projects. This ensures that their needs and interests are met, leading to more relevant and impactful outcomes. Moreover, HOP projects facilitate the creation of extra-regional linkages, promoting the sharing of experiences and best practices across Europe. This international collaboration enriches the learning experience and prepares students to become active game-changers capable of contributing to transformative innovation.

A Case Study from the University of Ferrara (UNIFE)

UNIFE conducted a HOP with the Space Sector of the Emilia Romagna (ER) region in Italy from March to May 2025. A group of international students from Italy, Germany and Spain collaborated to explore and develop five case studies of regional space ecosystems in Europe to outline the way these ecosystems are created and what policies favour their development. The project received positive feedback from both students and the regional stakeholders (ER Regional government and the agency Art-ER), which proposed a second phase to delve deeper into the topic and identify potential strategies to support decision-making.

In conclusion, Hands-On Projects represent a significant step forward in experiential learning, offering students and regions a pathway to innovation and growth. We invite all students and stakeholders to join us in this exciting journey towards a more collaborative and impactful educational experience.
