On November 21, 2024, the University of Ferrara hosted the COLOURS International Student Innovation CoLab, addressing the invasive blue crab issue impacting Ferrara’s marine ecosystems. The event brought together students from various countries, professionals, and policymakers, including the Mayor of Goro, to tackle the environmental and economic challenges posed by the blue crab.
The hybrid format enabled international student participation, fostering diverse perspectives and innovative solutions. Participants proposed strategies ranging from further research to sustainable market approaches, aiming to turn the invasive species into an economic opportunity.
Students from Goro and Comacchio, areas most affected by the invasive crab, expressed their gratitude for the workshop. Gabriella La Macchia, a participant remarked, “When I received the Unife newsletter mentioning a workshop tackling Blue Crabs, I was wowed! They are talking about it, I must participate. This is a disaster for my family; we are fishermen, and I go fishing with my granddad every morning. I think the issue has not been treated seriously, and I am so glad that COLOURS chose it as a topic!”
The event underscored COLOURS’ commitment to student engagement and growth, with initiatives like masterclasses and workshops enhancing students’ skills to tackle real-world problems. The CoLab raised awareness about climate change’s impact on Ferrara’s marine challenges and provided a platform for creative problem-solving. Participants left with new insights, skills, and a certificate of participation, contributing to a critical environmental issue.
