CoLab: Exploring Urban Vibrations across Environmental Quality, Mobility Systems and Smart Infrastructure

Date: May 20, 2026 — May 22, 2026

Location: University of Ferrara

Event type: Hybrid

Status: Closed for application

We are delighted to announce the Resonant Cities Lab, an immersive CoLab taking place from 20–22 May 2026. Hosted at the Student Entrepreneurship Centre (Laboratorio Aperto) at the University of Ferrara (Italy), this initiative is organised as part of the COLOURS European University Alliance.

Tuning into Urban Vibrations

Contemporary cities are shaped by phenomena that are often invisible yet fundamental: sounds, movements, flows, and vibrations. These dynamics reflect how our infrastructures, mobility systems, and urban environments truly operate.

The Resonant Cities Lab explores how these “vibro-acoustic” dynamics can be understood not merely as challenges to be mitigated, but as vital resources for innovation. Our goal is to design cities that are more sustainable, intelligent, and, above all, liveable.

Why Join the CoLab?

This is an interdisciplinary, practice-oriented learning environment. You will work in diverse teams to investigate urban phenomena and develop project ideas that address real-world challenges.

Key benefits for participants:

  • Skill Development: Gain hands-on experience in project design, interdisciplinary problem-solving, and proposal development.
  • Professional Recognition: All participants will receive an Open Badge and a certificate of participation.
  • Entrepreneurial Support: The most promising projects will be encouraged to apply for the University of Ferrara’s “Junior Entrepreneurs” call, offering pre-incubation support and professional mentoring.
  • Networking: Interact directly with academic experts, industry representatives, and international stakeholders from the COLOURS Alliance.

The Programme

The Lab follows a hybrid format (available both on-site and online) and will be conducted in English.

  • Day 1 (20 May): Institutional welcome and expert-led masterclasses to launch the activities. A light lunch will be provided for on-site participants.
  • Day 2 (21 May): Laboratory visits, technical demonstrations, and an urban sound awareness walk. The afternoon features a facilitated “Design Sprint” teamwork session.
  • Day 3 (22 May): Final project development and pitch preparation, culminating in team presentations.

Thematic Challenge Lines

Participants will engage with four interconnected areas:

  1. Environmental Quality: Understanding the impact of vibrations on health and urban comfort.
  2. Mobility Systems: Exploring the relationship between transport and vibro-acoustic patterns.
  3. Smart Infrastructure: Developing new ways to measure and visualise urban data.
  4. Design Opportunity: Reframing vibrations as a resource for architectural innovation.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome students, PhD candidates, researchers, and academic staff from all disciplines. Whether your background is in Engineering, Physics, Architecture, or the Humanities and Social Sciences, your perspective is valuable. We especially encourage those interested in sustainability, technological innovation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to get involved.
